First off, lingual braces are invisible. The brackets are placed on the back side of the teeth, and they are not visible from the front.  Working just like traditional braces, lingual braces eventually straighten a patient's teeth within the same amount of time metal braces would.  Of course, each patient's timeline depends upon the specific case of lingual braces aligning.

For lingual braces, your teeth will be utilized to make an impression.  Afterwards, a laboratory will then use computer technology to design the metal brackets customized for the back of each tooth. The brackets are then transferred to your teeth and cemented.

Dr. Patel will also provide special wax to help you get used to Lingual braces faster. It is vitally important for you to maintain good oral hygiene. Regular checkups by your family dentist are recommended during the orthodontic treatment period. An electrical toothbrush is also helpful and will be complimentary provided to you as a part of your orthodontic treatment at our office.

Most patients find that it takes a week to completely get used to the Lingual braces. The "geting used to" time period is the same as with Labial(outside) braces. In fact, patients who have switched from Labial to Lingual braces mid-treatment, find Lingual braces easier to get used to then Labial braces.

You will be aware of your tongue coming in contact with the braces. Difficulty is sometimes encountered with the "s" or "sh" sounds, intiallly . However, most patients have found that tongue naturally adjusts to accomodate the Lingual braces and speech returns to normal within a few weeks. You will be provided a complimentary speech training audio CD to help you through this process.
